The WSA Online Exhibition for 2011 is a fine collection of outstanding artwork. While there are a variety of approaches, styles and subjects, all of the work is of excellent quality.
I was particularly impressed with the level of pictorial design and the use of color throughout all of the paintings. There is a definite mastery of the medium on display here.
It has been an honor for me to review and judge this exhibit. As watercolor artists, we all share in a grand heritage. In the western world, it was American artists who elevated watercolor from a method of sketching to a way of producing finished paintings. Whenever we touch a paper with watercolor, we are celebrating something of that heritage. We are working in the medium of such masters as Sargent, Homer and Wyeth.
